The Miro's on the Strike One

We always like to feature Phil's Fisher Kids of the Month. They are usually athletic 9 to 14 year olds with a passion for the sport, but in August 2002, the Champion Kid Angler was just 5 years old. Juan Miro Jr. from Spain proved to be a tough and talented little fisherman who endured two 10-hour days on the STRIKE ONE without a single complaint. The first day was a family event, the three Miro daughters along with mom Margarita, dad Juan Ramon and Juan Jr. fished together and saw lots of action at El Moro amidst the schools of Skip Jack tuna. Everyone had their share of hook-ups and the Skip Jack count was over 30. A good-sized Needlefish as well as a Pargo rounded out the day.

Day two was reserved for the serious Miro fishermen and this trio turned out to be Juan Ramon Sr., his beautiful teen-aged daughter Ana and feisty 5 year old Juan. (Phil's Mystery of the Month is how 5 year olds are immune to jet lag). The quest of the day was a trophy fish so Captain Hector and the STRIKE ONE headed out to La Corbeteña in search of the elusive blue water. As August went, even the ocean at this hot spot was murky and green. Phil decided to try using down riggers in the chance that the marlin and giant yellow fin were down deep beneath this green mess. The seas were rough; 6 to 8 foot swells from the south and a 30-knot north wind pitched the Miro family around, even on this sea worthy boat. With no success at hooking big game, the decision was made to return to El Moro and go for more action with the Skip Jacks. This suited the Fisher Kid of the month just fine, a 5 pounder was fight enough for a 5 year old and he was thrilled to have hands on experience rather than watch dad fight a marlin all afternoon.
